Hessian fly is a serious pest of North Carolina wheat. A description of its life cycle and management strategies is available, with a

and

on biology and management also available. It is most easily and effectively managed with resistant varieties. However, variety evaluation for Hessian fly prior to 2024 was out-of-date.

We planted an evaluated a trial in 2023 in Lenoir County, North Carolina with the support of the North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association. We evaluated this trial in December 2023 and created a resource for growers to evaluate potentially susceptible and resistant wheat varieties. Furthermore, we provide a comparison of our results to results from Georgia. Our resistance ratings align nearly perfectly.
